A useful heating schedule starts with when people are home and what keeps them comfortable. Negotiating it may take longer than programming it.
Start with the controls you have
A programmable thermostat can follow a schedule. A smart thermostat may add occupancy-based adjustments and remote control. Neither automatically guarantees savings: the existing schedule and how the controls are used matter.
Match the schedule to the system
Heat pumps need particular care with setbacks. Depending on the system and conditions, recovering from a large temperature change can call on backup heat. Follow equipment guidance rather than applying one schedule to every home.
Make comfort part of the decision
